Explore the Musicolor Method NYC blog for inspiring stories, expert tips, and creative ideas that make music learning fun and engaging.

Founded in Brooklyn in 2007 by Andrew Ingkavet, Musicolor Method began as Park Slope Music Lessons, born out of a personal journey to find an engaging way for his son to overcome limitations. That small living-room initiative evolved into a thriving music school that now spans multiple NYC neighborhoods. Their core belief is that music isn’t just about melodies; it’s about nurturing confidence, resilience, and creativity.
At the heart of their approach lies a vibrant, color-coded system that assigns each musical note its own hue. This ingenious scaffolding simplifies music reading, allowing young learners to connect sight and sound without grappling with traditional notation pressure. Aside from making it more intuitive, color-coding also reinforces memory and keeps lessons playful and engaging.
Musicolor brings music into the comfort zone of the home. Their holistic in-home lessons, starting from age 4, blend instrument training with life skill development, all delivered in a familiar space. Their Upper West Side and Park Slope branches proudly describe how living-room dynamics create a stress-free, routine-rich environment, ideal for building confidence and emotional growth.
For children taking music lessons, in particular, we offer lessons for the following musical instruments:

And more!
Beyond one-on-one, they offer group early-childhood classes like “Penguin Pals” for ages 1 to 4, and host recitals and spring performances, creating a strong sense of community and celebration. Their Park Slope location even runs a scholarship program to enable access for families facing financial barriers.
Musicolor isn’t just outward-facing; their main site also invites parents and educators to explore. Parents are offered free trial lessons, while teachers and entrepreneurs can delve into a franchise opportunity complete with curriculum guides and structured support. Their vision extends beyond teaching music. It’s about transforming educational experiences and helping teachers grow their own businesses.
