Years ago, a trained musician sat across from me and told me my students were not making real music.

I asked her why.

She said they were playing songs before they could read standard notation. As if the dots on the page were the music. As if the joy in the room, a kid grinning because she just played her first real song, was some kind of counterfeit.

I did not have a name for what she was doing yet. I do now.

Tradition dressed up as rigor

Standard notation is old. It is useful. Our teachers use it, later, once a student has a reason to want it.

But somewhere along the way, a lot of music education let notation stop being a tool and become a toll. You do not get to call yourself a musician until you have paid it. You do not get to play until you can read.

I call this the Powdered Wig Problem. Some schools are still running the room like it is 1780, powdered wig and all. Nobody decided this on purpose. It calcified over centuries of conservatories and gatekeepers, the same way any tradition calcifies. Comfortable for the people who already climbed that ladder. Invisible as a barrier to everyone else, because from the inside, a wall you already climbed does not look like a wall. It looks like the way things are done.

A four-year-old named Carl

Here is what that gate actually costs, and it is not the kids who eventually push through. It is the ones who never try at all.

One of our students, I will call him Carl, came to us after his parents had already tried three other teachers. Carl was four. Full of curiosity, full of questions, so much energy. He stuck his head into the piano's soundboard to hear how it worked. He leaned in close, watching my hands on the keys. Then he started banging on them, hard, laughing, because he just wanted to make the sound.

He was not misbehaving. He was doing exactly what a curious four-year-old does. I redirected him instead of stopping him. "What color is this dot? Do you see the same color on your finger? Which finger is red?" By the end of our half-hour lesson, Carl was playing a song with all ten fingers. His father could not believe it.

It was only later I learned the rest. Three teachers before us had already told his parents that maybe music was not for him. So tragic! Carl almost got turned away, and with it, every superpower that comes from making music, because nobody had connected with him yet.

That is why we start where the child is, not where a textbook says a child should be.

Scaffold, not toll

We use color-coded notation as a scaffold, not a gate. It shows up when a student needs it, to do something she already loves and wants to do more precisely. It fades into the background once it has done its job.

A scaffold serves the thing being built. A toll serves the gatekeeper. The music was never the paper.

Real rigor, not exclusion

None of this means we go easy on our students. Ask any of our twenty Brooklyn teachers. We hold kids to real standards. Real rigor asks a five-year-old to listen harder than she ever has. It asks a nine-year-old to sit with a hard passage instead of skipping to the fun part.

What real rigor is not, is exclusionary. It never decides, before a child has played a single note, whether that child belongs in the room.

If your kid is curious, energetic, maybe a little too eager to bang on the keys, that is not a reason to wait. That is exactly who we build lessons for.
